June 19, 2018, Tower of Babel
After getting a taste of the Tower of Babel, but turning back just before finishing the gully, Fred and I decided to climb it on Tuesday, June 19, 2018. The weather forecast promised much warmer temperatures than the day I went with Nic and it appeared it was going to be a blue sky, no cloud day.
Once again, we left Calgary just before 4:00 am in order to land a parking spot and once again we were successful. As we were driving in, I pointed to the gully we would be climbing, and Fred looked surprised to say the least 😂. But it really does look far steeper from the road than it feels when climbing.
Of course, once packed up and ready to start, I had to run up the rock pile first to get pictures of Moraine Lake. One of the things I love about alpine lakes is how they rarely look the same. This morning was the lake was incredibly calm providing a perfection reflection and the colour was more teal than a week ago.
The climb was awesome. There were only two other hikers and while we hugged the rock wall climber’s right, they hugged the rock wall climber’s left. It was a good thing we were wearing helmets because there was the occasional boulder that came from above. Once up, the four of us (Kathryn and Sasha) had the plateau top to ourselves for about an hour. It was indescribably beautiful. I couldn’t stop taking pictures. I will say it is enjoyable coming down. After about a third of the way, it becomes a very fun scree run 😀
Fred and I thoroughly enjoyed this day in the mountains!
